We’re bringing the heat and excitement of Flavourtown but at local market prices so it’s accessible to everyone.”And Fieri hasn’t forgotten to include some local flavour in his offerings.“If you’re going to do South Africa, you got to have some scratch-made rubbed and sauced peri-peri chicken wings, right? You’re not going to find grilled springbok loin from Mokopane in New York City but after trying it in South Africa, I may have to change that.”Celebrity foodie Guy Fieri, known for his unusual take on guilty pleasure eating, opened a new restaurant in the Menlyn Maine shopping centre in Pretoria on 1 April 2017. South Africa to push for 15-year extension of Agoa

first_img29 July 2014South Africa will push for the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) to be extended for a 15-year period when its current period expires next year, and for its own inclusion in the programme’s rollover, says Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies.Briefing reporters in Pretoria on Monday ahead of the United States-Africa Leaders’ Summit that takes place in Washington next week, Davies said South Africa believed that Agoa “has been a useful platform for cooperation between Africa and the US, and we are calling for an extension for 15 years”.African trade ministers will meet with US Trade Representative Michael Froman ahead of next week’s summit to discuss Agoa, which enables 39 eligible sub-Saharan African countries to export most products duty-free to the United States. The programme has seen total African exports to the US more than quadruple, and US exports to sub-Saharan Africa more than triple, since its inception in 2000.Davies said that a 15-year extension would “allow certainty for investments that are going to be made in African countries to take advantage of the Agoa opportunities. We believe that a rollover for that period of time on more or less the existing architecture would be a mutually beneficial and developmental decision that could be taken by the US.”On the question of South Africa’s possible exclusion from Agoa because of its perceived middle-income status, Davies said the government was arguing for South Africa’s continued inclusion.“The existing trading relationship with the US, including Agoa, has supported a growing, diversified and relatively balanced trading relationship,” Davies said, adding that South Africa’s economy was still characterised by high levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality.According to the Department of Trade and Industry, combined trade between South Africa and the US has shown consistent growth, increasing from R88-billion in 2009 to R130-billion in 2013.“It’s reasonably balanced,” Davies said. “Our view is that this relationship has been underpinned by Agoa, and therefore this is an arrangement that isn’t broken and doesn’t need fixing. It needs to be continued.”In addition, Davies argued, when the US Congress meets to decide on Agoa’s future, it should look at the issue of South Africa not “line by line” but holistically, taking into account that, when negotiating any kind of trade agreement, South Africa does so as part of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), which includes Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland. To exclude South Africa while including the other members would undermine the coherence of the SACU, Davies said.President Jacob Zuma will lead the South African delegation to the summit, which will be preceded by a meeting of US and African business executives, as well as the Agoa ministerial meeting.Davies said one aspect of the summit would focus on trade and investment, while the other focused on security and human development.Source: read more

Clean up continues after massive grain spill in New Carlisle

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Late Sunday night Sam Sutherly got a catastrophic phone call he never wanted.“When I got the phone call I just said, ‘Oh that’s nice.’ I turned to my wife and said, ‘I really don’t want to go.’”The Sutherly family owns Miami Valley Feed and Grain in New Carlisle where a grain tank collapsed late on Jan. 21, spilling around 365,000 bushels of corn worth over $1.25 million.“The tank gave way and the impact of the corn caused the nearby transformers to explode,” Sutherly said. “Our renters there at the elevator — there is a house on the grounds — said it sounded like a jet airplane was coming in and she looked out and all the corn was laying on the ground. The tank was built in 1968 when the government wanted to do some government storage. It was full. It was 72-feet tall to the edge and then an additional 20 feet tall to the peak of the cone.”The wave of corn washed over the grounds, leveled multiple buildings and buried Route 571. The road had to be closed. Power was lost but restored fairly quickly by Dayton Power and Light. When Sutherly arrived at the scene after that ominous late-night phone call, he was prepared but still surprised at the magnitude of the problem.“I had an idea of what I’d be walking into. I knew it would be catastrophic, but when I got here I was shocked,” Sutherly said on Jan. 23. “We were very fortunate that no one was here working. It couldn’t have happened at a better time. At 11:40 on a Sunday night there was little to no traffic on 571.“You never know when you walk into a situation like that where to start. It is like putting a puzzle together. We just brought some big square straw bales from our farm in to make a retaining wall to keep our feed mill facility cleared. We started with two dump tracks and pay loaders piling corn. We eventually brought in track-hoes and two more dump trucks. We have been trying to run them 24-7 to get the road clear. We’re trying to tuck corn anywhere on our property we can. We are pretty close to getting the road open here soon.”The family got started with the business 23 years ago when the Sutherlys bought the local elevator.“My brother Jim left his Extension job to start at Miami Valley Feed and Grain to learn grain marketing. After college I came back and started running the fertilizer business and trying to expand that. Jim handled nutrition. Then we incorporated my younger sister Molly and my younger cousin David and he runs the grain facility. Molly keeps everything straight and my mother works here part time too. It is a family business,” Sutherly said. “The growth on the grain side has been due to some local closures and co-op mergers. A lot of feed facilities have shut down and we are one of the few feed facilities that still custom mix and we have grown through word of mouth. We try to treat everyone with respect and give them the best service we can.”Sutherly said the response from Feed and Grain employees and the farm community has been incredible following the incident.“My employees are very loyal. They came out to help and one told me that he was either going to lay in bed or cry, so he might as well help. It has been phenomenal the people who have reached out to us,” Sutherly said. “It makes me feel really good. I have friends that work in the co-op system at Heritage and Sunrise, and they might be competitors, but they are great friends and they have reached out to us to offer help. They have been through some problems throughout the years and they have some experts on handling these situations. I think of that commercial with Paul Harvey about ‘When God made a farmer,’ well God made some courageous farmers who are really good people.”There is more good news from the terrible situation.“The corn is salvageable. The salvage company is in here right now. They analyzed it and they say 80% of it is salvageable. The corn in that tank was in excellent condition. It was cooled down and dried appropriately so there was no issue with the corn. That is a good thing,” Sutherly said. “We do carry insurance and have a nice policy and it looks like we will be very well covered. The grain is covered, the facilities are covered and it looks like we’ll be able to rebuild and make our place a little more user friendly. To be honest, it wasn’t a very user-friendly place for semis. There was a lot of backing and turning sharp corners. Our focus is to rebuild and continue to serve our customers. We know they’ll have to be patient to let us get to that point. Obviously it will be a long process to get there.”Sometimes, a catastrophe can be a miracle too. Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast, October 18, 2018

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest No major change in the forecast this morning, but we are making a minor tweak for this weekend. In the meantime, we should see another dry day today, and better sunshine potential than yesterday in many areas. We are dealing with a very frosty start in many areas too. Dry weather continues tomorrow, although we will likely see clouds thicken up later in the day. The frontal boundary and moisture set up we detailed yesterday is still holding together this morning, meaning we won’t rule out a shower or two very near the Ohio river tomorrow night into Saturday morning, and there is potential for a spit or sprinkle over the rest of Ohio. The one tweak we are making comes for the 24 period that follows. WE think that clouds will play a greater role through Saturday, and there is a better chance of moisture over the state overnight Saturday night. A wave of moisture moving across the great lakes will dip a little farther south across Michigan overnight Saturday. This can trigger a few showers down into Ohio, and we have to leave the door open to a few hundredths to a quarter of an inch, combined, across 60% of Ohio from Saturday morning through into early Sunday morning. The map at right gives a snapshot look at potential action just after sunset Saturday night. The moisture will be pretty light and not intense at all, but it is becoming more obvious that we can not rule out a bit of action here. It should not be enough to dramatically delay harvest, but it may make it so we do not dry very much on Saturday, and it may lead to more corn being worked than soybeans. Time will tell.We are dry for Sunday afternoon and stay dry through the following Saturday morning.A nice rain making system will be here for next Saturday afternoon (27th) through Sunday. Rain totals can be from .25”-1” with coverage at 80% of the state. Behind that system we go dry for Monday the 29th and stay dry through the following Friday, November 2nd.No change in our temperature thoughts. Chilly this morning, but we actually spend most of the rest of this week and next at normal to below normal levels. Next weekend, as the rains move in, we see temps climb slightly, and we should be normal to slightly above normal for the 27th through at least month’s end.last_img read more

Primaryschoolers yanked for bullying investigation launched

Video has been in circulation and has now made local TV news. The boys from one of the Provo-based public primary schools appear to capture themselves roughing up another boy, using foul language and completely enjoying repeatedly hitting the student. In the face, in the back, in the head, hits to the intimidated boy’s abdomen, lots of jeering and cheering and at one point the lead antagonist seems to spit on the bullying victim. The Ministry is discouraging spread of this video, but up to news production time well over 1,100 had viewed the news report by SunTV. I quote from a press release issued last night: “We are asking the public, that in the interest of the welfare and protection of the child who was bullied and parents, that we respect their rights and cease and desist from the circulation of this horrid video.” The authorities have already been called in this case.last_img read more
