“There’s a mixed market at the moment,” said Moyes. “Nobody’s quite sure where the price is just now. “We’ve had offers for players which we think are quite small. I can see where other clubs might be thinking there’s not enough value for their players as well. “I definitely (have sympathy for Martinez). But I also know if I had been Everton manager and Sir Alex (Ferguson) had come asking for Baines and Fellaini I’d have found it very difficult to keep them. “I always thought the right thing to do was the right thing for players. “Roberto is new in his job and I’m sure he’ll get to understand how Everton work. “I respect Everton greatly and speak with Bill Kenwright most weeks. “Of course taking their players is going to affect them but there is not any disrespect whatsoever because we didn’t make the offer public.” Press Association “Wayne has recovered and has a good chance of starting,” Moyes told reporters. It would be an interesting move by the Red Devils chief bearing in mind opposite number Jose Mourinho has already suggested he will make a third offer for Rooney next week. Rooney has been at the centre of just one of the transfer sagas that have dominated the summer. Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale have been the others, although in the past week neither Newcastle manager Alan Pardew nor Moyes’ Everton successor Roberto Martinez have taken too kindly to their players being the subject of bids either. Pardew accused Arsene Wenger of lacking respect by making a bid for midfielder Yohan Cabaye hours before the Magpies’ 4-0 defeat at Manchester City. And Martinez questioned the timing of Moyes’ £28million joint approach for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini, which was made on Friday but only became public knowledge on Monday and drew a withering attack from former Toffees keeper Neville Southall. He accused Moyes of lacking respect for Everton by lodging a bid so far below the accepted value of the pair. However, Moyes insists he remains on good terms with his former chairman Bill Kenwright and that he had never disrespected the Merseyside outfit. Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed Wayne Rooney could start Monday’s eagerly-anticipated Premier League showdown with Chelsea. Rooney completed the final half hour of United’s victory at Swansea last weekend, setting up goals for Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck. And with another week’s training under his belt after shaking off the hamstring and shoulder injuries that prevented him from playing any part in United’s pre-season campaign, and the knock he picked up at the Liberty Stadium, the 27-year-old could feature against the club who have already had two bids for him turned down already.
South African Tourism Minister Marthinusvan Schalkwyk will chair the WorldEconomic Forum’s aviation, travel andtourism industry agenda council(Image: www.iisd.org)MEDIA CONTACTS• Ronel BesterDepartment of Tourism+27 21 465 7240+27 83 242 [email protected] ARTICLES• SA surgeon new head of ISS• Barnard surgeon with heart• SA scientist leads cancer fight• SA woman goes for Seven SummitsNosimilo RamelaSouth African Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk has been appointed chair of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) aviation, travel and tourism industry agenda council for 2010 and 2011.This follows the minister’s acceptance of an invitation issued by the WEF’s executive chairperson, Prof Klaus Schwab.Although Van Schalkwyk is no stranger to the forum ‒ having been part of the South African delegation at its annual meetings in Davos, Switzerland, for the past two years ‒ he said he was honoured to take up the new position.“I believe the council plays a vital role in facilitating debate and the exchange of expertise in order to advise the World Economic Council and the international community on emerging issues in the tourism, travel, and aviation sector,” he said in response to his appointment.“I look forward to the interaction with the other members of the council and our sharing of ideas on issues which affect our industry on a global scale.”Role of the councilKey tasks of the aviation, travel and tourism industry agenda council include monitoring important trends in the three sectors, identifying global risks and ensuring the accessibility of knowledge and information about the industry.Council gatherings give industry leaders from around the world the chance to engage with their peers to define and address critical issues. Meetings also help stakeholders identify areas of potential growth and work out ways to drive economic progress.Interdependent sectorsVan Schalkwyk said the WEF has played a vital role in bringing leaders from the aviation, tourism and travel sectors together and facilitating “forward-looking and inclusive dialogue between key stakeholders”.But, the main difficulty facing the industry was the belief that the three sectors were unrelated, he said.“Tourism and aviation are interdependent. Success in the one sector depends on and builds on success in the other.”The sectors also share many challenges, barriers and opportunities, he said.“Pertinent issues currently on the global agenda are firstly how travel, tourism and aviation can play a leadership role in the transition to a greener economy and, secondly, how these sectors can contribute to an equitable global trade expansion.”Man of changeVan Schalkwyk served as the South African minister of environmental affairs and tourism from 2004 until 2009, after which the departments were split, and he was appointed minister of tourism.During his tenure he’s been instrumental in the creation of a protection fleet to prevent illegal fishing, brought about a complete ban on the use and production of asbestos, and implemented a Black Economic Empowerment scorecard and charter for tourism. He was appointed president of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment in June 2008, when it was held in Johannesburg. He has also enabled South Africa to become one of the leading countries in UN climate change negotiations, which has seen him gain significant respect in both the developed and developing world. In March 2010 Van Schalkwyk was nominated by President Jacob Zuma to take up the role of UN climate change executive secretary, following the resignation of Yvo de Boer.Although the South African minister was one of the favourites for the job, Christiana Figueres, a veteran climate change negotiator from Costa Rica, took up the post in the end.
Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces The big difference with the old version of reQall is that you will now actually get an alert pushed to the phone that reminds you of that appointment you just dictated into your phone. Before, if you used the free version, you had to open up the app, and what’s the chance of a user actually doing that? In the pro version, reQall already sent out SMS alerts, but now, even the free version of the app can send out push notifications. We have seen quite a few IM apps that used push well, but this is the first time that we have encountered an application that makes really good use of push notifications, but isn’t an IM app.Correction: reQall just told us that the free version will not support push notifications.LocationsOne of the apps’ coolest features (though restricted to the pro version) is that you can also assign locations to tasks. Sadly, though, because developers can’t wake up apps remotely and get a user’s location without the app running, the app still has to be running for this feature to work well. You can, however, bring up a map and see nearby places that also have reminders attached to them. The pro version of ReQall also nicely integrates with your contacts, which allows you to easily make calls or send emails right from your list of reminders.Pro VersionTo get the most out of reQall, however, you really need a paid account. For $2.99 a month, which is not a major expense, you also get great features like easier voice memo recording by simply holding the phone to your ear (similar to how the Google Mobile app works on the iPhone), reminders by SMS, and access to a more fully-featured “memory jogger’ function, which tries to remind you of items that you might just have forgotten otherwise. For professional users, the integration with Outlook is probably also another must-have feature that is only available in the pro version. The exact differences are a bit complicated, but reQall provides its users with a nice table that lists all the differences.Even the free version provides great features, and now that the app’s pro version supports push notifications, it can finally live up to its promise. frederic lardinois Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagement What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Related Posts Earlier this year, we reviewedreQall, a very smart task manager, organizer, and ‘memory tool’ for the iPhone and BlackBerry. It combines a calendar, integration with Outlook and Google Calendar (in the paid version for $2.99 a month), and to-do list functions with a surprisingly useful ‘Memory Jogger‘ feature that brings up reminders depending on the time of the day, date, and a user’s location. When we reviewed the app, we noted that it was already a very interesting product, but that it would surely benefit from the iPhone 3.0 release with push notifications, and today this new release for the iPhone 3.0 operating system has finally arrived.Free Transcriptions and Push NotificationsWe got a chance to test the app out for the last few weeks, and the app does indeed make great use of the iPhone’s ability to receive push notifications. This finally makes third-party calendars on the iPhone useful, and reQall is one of the first calendar/to-do list apps to make really good use of this feature. One of reQall’s best features is that it can turn voice memos and free-style notes like “meeting with Marshall at 2pm on Friday” into formatted text and enter these as appointments into your reQall calendar. The voice transcriptions were generally spot-on. Tags:#Apple#mobile#Product Reviews#web The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology
5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App This year has seen an explosion in the development of mobile augmented reality applications, from games and parlor tricks to incredibly useful applications that provide more information about the world around us.Today, Austrian smartphone development shop Mobilizy, creator of the Wikitude World Browser, has announced it will be presenting a standard AR markup language (ARML) to the the AR Consortium. Such a step would remove one of the five barriers to AR that we recently wrote about: interoperability. Cross-platform, open development standards would allow users more ways to see more AR content. Read on for a video and details.Establishing an open ARML specification will allow users to access any AR data in the physical world from any AR browser. It will also accelerate innovation and allow for more, better, and less expensive AR apps.In our recent post on barriers to mobile AR, Marshall Kirkpatrick wrote, “Right now you cannot see information from the Wikitude AR environment if you’re looking through the Layar AR browser. This could be the coming of a new browser war just like that of the 1990s… A lack of interoperability between AR environments would be a tragedy of the same type as if the web had remained defined by the islands of AOL and Compuserve or Internet Explorer, forever.”Layar, Mobilizy’s biggest competitor in the AR space and who just today announced the addition of a 3D interface to its platform, has spoken publicly about interoperability in the past. Layar’s co-founder Maarten Lens-Fitzgerald told us, “The lock-ins and exclusivity won’t work. Openness and interoperability are where it’s going; we’re going to discover how exactly with other people…That’s where it’s going: control to the user.”The basic idea of the ARML specification is that the data can be viewed on any augmented reality browser but also in Google Earth. Augmented reality browsers can include an open URL dialog where the user can enter an URL pointing to a valid ARML document, and users can then easily bookmark those URLs. The markup language is based on KML, Google’s Keyhole Markup Language for mapping applications that was just turned over to the Open Geospatial Consortium last year. Here’s a video from Wikitude explaining more: jolie odell Related Posts Tags:#Augmented Reality#web 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People… 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… Features of the proposed specification include the following:Founded upon KML with extension name-space for AR specific data;Placement of a “View in AR” icon which clearly identifies a mobilewebsite that supports location aware (real time) data in an ARMLbrowser;Compliance with basic XML document structure – no proprietaryprogramming API required to create an AR layer.ARML adherent data can be viewed on ARML browsers (e.g. Wikitude)and KML browsers (e.g. Google Earth);Custom styling of AR data (points of interest) via standard KMLstyling elements; andInitial support for UTF-8 encoding.Mobilizy is offering limited access to the preview version of their upcoming ARML browser. Interested parties and developers with questions about the ARML specification should email Mobilizy.

When that ceases to be, we will no longer rightfully call ourselves a free society. Judy Woodruff deserves recognition for lifetime as much as anyone I can think of. Furthermore, she has earned it.” When accepting the award, Woodruff captivated the audience and spoke strongly with regard to women in media, “We have come a long way, but we still have work to do. We need more women in decision-making jobs, more women doing the hiring, more women deciding which stories get covered, and more women reaching out to bring along younger women like the remarkable women we are seeing here today.”Erica Hill, CNN anchor and correspondent, hosted the awards. Hill has a rich history with the Gracie Awards as the 2015 honoree for Outstanding Correspondent. CALGARY – TransCanada Corp. is investing $2.4 billion to expand its NGTL natural gas system in Western Canada as growing production in the region has filled existing capacity and battered prices. The company said Thursday that the decision to expand NGTL comes after it recently completed an oversubscribed open season, with shippers committing to one billion cubic feet per day of expansion capacity for an average of almost 29 years.“The successful open season shows strong industry support to significantly expand transmission capacity out of the basin and improve market connectivity for Canadian natural gas production,” said company chief executive Russ Girling in a statement. The NGTL system is a dense web of pipeline that covers much of Alberta and runs into northeastern B.C., acting as a gathering system for producers in some of the richest natural gas basins on the continent.Producers in the region have, however, been victims of their own success in unlocking the shale gas in areas like the Montney and Deep Basin, as pipeline constraints and lack of demand in some markets have hit prices that have even strayed into negative territory.“If you imagine Alberta today as a sink and the tap’s on, right now the sink is filling up faster than it can drain,” said Brook Papau, managing director of RS Energy Group.Traditional export routes to California and the U.S. Midwest, as well as using the gas in province, are full-up, said Papau, leaving producers to look to Eastern Canada to find better prices.TransCanada said its investment in the NGTL system will help link more production to its Mainline system that runs to Ontario and which still has significant untapped capacity. The expansion program will include approximately 375 kilometres of large diameter pipeline, compression facilities, meter stations and other associated facilities. The company has already alleviated some pressure in the region after reaching long-term fixed price agreements last year with shippers on its Mainline, and said Thursday it continues to look at the potential of further expanding natural gas shipping on the pipeline.“We continue to work diligently with industry to facilitate economic access for their natural gas to key export markets, including access to Eastern Canada and the U.S. Northeast through TransCanada’s Canadian Mainline and downstream systems,” said Girling.TransCanada would have to invest some capital to restore the extra capacity in the Mainline, but another open season on the pipeline would be well-received, said energy analyst Ed Kallio, principal at Eau Claire Energy Advisory, Inc.“I have no doubt that if they do an open season it will be very highly subscribed.”Producers have been scrambling to find alternatives after West Coast liquefied natural gas projects have failed to emerge, said Kallio, while producers haven’t cut back on production because the shale formations are also yielding valuable liquids used to dilute thick bitumen.“Those high value liquids are driving activity, and the natural gas comes along with it.”TransCanada said it expects to file a project description with the National Energy Board by the second quarter of this year to start the review process and hopes to begin construction on the NGTL expansion in 2019.The Calgary-based company reported net income attributable to shareholders of $861 million or 98 cents per share in the fourth-quarter of 2017, compared to a loss of $358 million or 43 cents per share in the same period a year earlier.Fourth-quarter earnings were boosted by a number of one-time items, including an $804 million recovery of deferred income taxes as a result of U.S. tax reform. The company said it continues to make progress on its Keystone XL pipeline project after announcing sufficient shipper support in January but has still held back on officially sanctioning the project.TransCanada has said it is however working on construction preparation as well as new landowner agreements in Nebraska and general permitting.Companies in this story: (TSX:TRP)
