“I’m not convinced at all that we should play this game again – here or there or anywhere – unless we can protect our fans, our band and of course, our athletes. So I’ve asked – I’ve reached out to President Wintersteen as well as President Nook at UNI because we don’t ever, I believe, play in their venue but they play in our venues. I think all three of us need to sit down and have a series of conversations with our athletic directors, with our band directors and with our campus security and safety people and say ‘how do we protect and ensure that something like what happened last weekend – eight days – doesn’t happen again?’”While it seems unlikely that Iowa and Iowa State will actually stop playing each other annually, it does appear the school is now taking what happened seriously. Perhaps the game will became a permanent Noon kickoff to keep fans in check a bit better. IOWA CITY, IOWA- OCTOBER 28: Head coach Kirk Ferentz of the Iowa Hawkeyes visits with University President Bruce Harreld before the match-up against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on October 28, 2017 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa. (Photo by Matthew Holst/Getty Images)The fallout after an unfortunate incident between the University of Iowa band and a number of Iowa State fans following last Saturday’s rivalry game continued on Monday. Iowa president Bruce Harreld is now suggesting that he’s not “convinced” the Hawkeyes should be playing the Cyclones in football anymore.Early last week, following Iowa’s 18-17 win in Ames, Iowa announced it was opening an investigation into an incident involving the program’s band after the contest. Later in the week, the two schools issued a joint statement on the matter, pushing sportsmanship between the two sides moving forward.A few students in the Iowa band took to social media to express their disappointment with how the athletic department handled the situation. In their posts, they alleged physical and sexual abuse at the hands of Iowa State fans.As a result, Iowa reopened its investigation. Now, Monday, Harreld told The Daily Iowan that he’s not sure the two sides should play anymore.
