Merson: Liverpool can end title race in week’s timeby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveArsenal hero Paul Merson says Liverpool can win the Premier League title in a week’s time.Merson believes if Liverpool win at the Etihad Stadium next month, a seven-point lead would be too much for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to overturn. He said, “Leicester vs Manchester City is a big game and a must-win game for City, who are in trouble now as they are four points behind Liverpool.”I mean it has now got down to the situation whereby if Liverpool win at City in a week’s time – it is all over.”So this is a big game for City and a hard one as Leicester can cause you problems But because they have to win, I think they will, but Saturday’s result will have knocked the stuffing out of them and Man City have now lost two of their last three league games.”And before that it looked like they would never ever lose a game, but I see them just winning this one to stay on the coat tails of Liverpool.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

He said: “Our experience of Newcastle last year was that they sat in and defended deep, and we found it difficult to break them down.“That was a challenge that when the manager came to the club, he wanted to help us in that aspect – of setting our team up and being able to work teams that are going to sit in against us, which is becoming quite a common theme.Newcastle did that very well against us last year, so I think they’ll come with the same game plan.”

Texas lost All-American Tim Irvin to Auburn after an official visit to the SEC power over the weekend, but one of the Longhorns’ other highly touted defensive back recruits doesn’t think it’s a big deal. No, Gardner took to Twitter on Monday with an interesting observation, which no doubt comes as a shot at the Spartans.Gardner noted that Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio wore an outfit that looked like something that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh would wear. Argentina left-back Nicolas Tagliafico has said his side want to take the pressure off superstar Lionel Messi ahead of their Copa America campaign. Messi is looking to win his first senior trophy with the Albiceleste, having lost three Copa America finals and one World Cup final during his international career. The 31-year-old is coming off another stellar individual campaign with Barcelona, having netted 51 goals in all competitions. An Argentina side in transition will need their talisman to be at his very best at the Copa America, which kicks off in Brazil later this month. But Tagliafico knows that his talismanic team-mate cannot do everything on his own.”It is hard to play against him and a plus watching him in your team,” Tagliafico told Goal. “We must work hard to avoid overloading him with pressure and allow him to enjoy things.”The 26-year-old admitted that winning the Copa America will be difficult for his side, who are trying not to get too ahead of themselves.”We will try to play a great Copa America but we are not thinking about being champions,” Tagliafico said. “We want to show our best version.”We all have the dream of becoming champions but we are in a transition stage and the ultimate goal is not being the champions, but creating a good group for doing everything possible to be champions.”Tagliafico is another of those coming off an impressive club campaign with Ajax, where he starred for a side that won a league and cup double, and sensationally reached the Champions League semi-finals. The left-back had plenty of interest from clubs across Europe, but opted to sign a contract extension and stay with the Dutch side for at least one more season.”Together we decided to stay one more season and leave next season if it has to happen,” Tagliafico said. “We are now one of the strongest teams in Europe after reaching the Champions League semi-final. I am so happy in Amsterdam, the people love me and I feel so good.”So it is good to keep enjoying one more season and let’s see what happens in a year.”One player who is not staying in Amsterdam is Frenkie de Jong, with the Dutch midfielder on his way to join Barcelona. Tagliafico believes his former team-mate has everything it takes to succeed at the highest level. “Frenkie has huge qualities and he is so intelligent on the pitch,” Tagliafico said. “Frenkie will have success for sure in Barcelona.”
Frank Lampard is “a natural match” for Chelsea in their search for a new head coach, according to former Manchester City team-mate Vincent Kompany.Chelsea were granted permission by Championship side Derby County on Tuesday to begin talks with Lampard, who is the overwhelming favourite to succeed Juventus-bound Maurizio Sarri.Lampard spent a season playing along Kompany at Manchester City after leaving Chelsea in the summer of 2014. And Kompany insists that, despite the Englishman having just a year of managerial experience with Derby behind him, he is the only real candidate for the top job at Stamford Bridge.Speaking at his presentation as Anderlecht’s new player-manager on Tuesday, Kompany told reporters: “Sign him up. He is the man!”Not only is Frank a great guy but someone who I learned so much from at a stage in my career. He was a bit older when he joined Manchester City and Frank was an incredible professional. “What he brought at the time, he stepped the level up for everyone else so I know the impact of Frank Lampard on a team and I’m trying to have the same impact when it comes as an older player for Anderlecht. “He’s up there with the most intelligent players so it’s a natural match with Chelsea, I completely support him.”After leaving Manchester City Lampard spent two seasons with sister club New York City FC before retiring in 2016. Two years later he made the move into coaching with Championship side Derby County. He impressed during his first season in management, guiding the Rams to the play-off final. However, his Premier League hopes were dashed after 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Wembley.Despite that disappointment, Lampard appears to have done enough to convince the Chelsea hierarchy that he is good enough for the top job at Stamford Bridge. If he does take the role then Lampard is likely to be welcomed with open arms by the Chelsea supporters who consider him one of the club’s greatest ever players. The former England midfielder spent 13 seasons as a player at Stamford Bridge, winning 13 major honours including three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, one Europa League and one Champions League. He is also the club’s all-time top scorer with 211 goals in 648 games in all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp insisted there was no reason for Liverpool to parade the Champions League trophy ahead of their win over Norwich City, saying it was time to move on. Liverpool secured their sixth European Cup with a win over Tottenham in the final in Madrid in June. But they opted not to parade the trophy on Friday, when they opened their Premier League campaign with a 4-1 victory over Norwich at Anfield. Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? Asked about that decision, Klopp was seemingly unaware of the possibility, but said he would not have done it anyway. “Nobody told me I have to. Is that what you do usually? I touched the Euro cup on the matchday there, the day after, and since then not,” he told a news conference. “No reason for it, I know how it feels. And people know how it looks. “If somebody expected that then somebody should’ve told me. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have done it anyway, because we are now in the new season. Enough celebration. “Nobody has to congratulate me anymore, but still everybody’s doing it. I’m really fine with all the things I heard about it, now let’s play the new season.” A calf injury to goalkeeper Alisson soured Liverpool’s win , which came thanks to first-half goals from Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Divock Origi after Grant Hanley’s seventh-minute own goal. But Klopp says Adrian, who came in for the injured Alisson, is ready to play. “He’s a confident guy,” the Reds boss said. “I don’t think he wanted to sit on the bench for the next couple of years, he made himself ready. “It’s a situation, but if you’re in a situation like this you want to have somebody who’s played in the league, who’s experienced. “He’s 32, a calm guy, good with his feet as we saw. That’s important for us, so a lot of good things, but you still don’t want to have a situation where only one goalie is fit.” Liverpool have a quick turnaround, with the club set to face a UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea on Wednesday before returning to league action against Southampton next Saturday. GLENDALE, AZ – JANUARY 01: Head coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes on the sidelines during the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at University of Phoenix Stadium on January 1, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)Rumors are swirling about the future of Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer following a telling report that surfaced on Friday morning.Meyer, who’s dealt with quite a bit during the 2018 college football season, has reportedly told Ohio State’s athletic department that the 2019 season will be his final one in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes are reportedly planning on keeping offensive coordinator Ryan Day as his potential replacement.Football Scoop reported the news on Friday morning. With that said, sources tell FootballScoop Ohio State is taking Ryan Day off the job market, with a significant raise coming and with the (most likely) unwritten understanding that he is in line to become head coach once Urban steps down. What’s that you say? Urban stepping down? So about that…While Urban has stated repeatedly publicly that he plans to coach next year, sources tell FootballScoop that the Ohio State head coach continues to contemplate his future on an ongoing basis, and we hear he has told Gene Smith that he doesn’t expect to continue to coach past the 2019 season. One source told us we should expect Urban to address this in the days following Saturday’s Big Ten Championship.Meyer was asked about this report on Friday ahead of the Big Ten Championship Game.“No comment,” he said.Ohio State’s athletic director, meanwhile, denied the news.“Have seen [the report] and been asked, no truth to it,” Ohio State athletic director Smith wrote in a text message to ESPN’s Heather Dinich. “Urban and I have not talked about that.”OK then.Meyer and Ohio State are set to play in the Big Ten Championship Game this evening. The Buckeyes and the Northwestern Wildcats are set to kick off at 8 p.m. E.T. The game will be on FOX.
MORGANTOWN, WV – NOVEMBER 23: Kyler Murray #1 of the Oklahoma Sooners warms up before the game against the West Virginia Mountaineers on November 23, 2018 at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, West Virginia. (Photo by Justin K. Aller/Getty Images)When the Oakland A’s drafted Kyler Murray No. 9 overall in June’s MLB Draft, they did so with the idea that Murray would eventually focus solely on baseball. Murray’s contract included a $4.6 million signing bonus and an agreement that he would only play one more season of college football.Well, Murray has been a revelation in that season, winning the Heisman Trophy and leading Oklahoma to the Big 12 title and College Football Playoff. In the meantime, he’s also rekindled talk of potentially sticking with football.Murray’s agent Scott Boras has been adamant that his client will play baseball next year. If Murray elects to continue his football career, he must forfeit his signing bonus.Boras on Kyler Murray: We negotiated a baseball contract provision allowing him to play COLLEGE football for 1 year…He is grateful & will honor agreement w/A’s & wants to be great MLB player. While every player would like to do both he understands why he’s focusing on baseball.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) December 10, 2018However, the latest report from Sports Illustrated’s Kalyn Kahler gives more credence to the possibility that Murray is wavering on his baseball commitment. According to Kahler, Oklahoma has submitted Murray’s name to the College Advisory Council for evaluation. The CAC is a “panel of senior personnel evaluators from NFL teams and directors from the league’s two scouting organizations.” The group provided feedback for any underclassman who is considering entering the NFL Draft, and provides the player with one of three grades: potential first round pick, potential second round pick or a recommendation that the player returns to school. Most major college programs submit their top underclassmen to the College Advisory Council for evaluation at the request of the player. One scout familiar with Oklahoma’s program says that the school usually only submits the names of players they really think will come out for the draft. Through an Oklahoma spokesperson, Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley declined to comment on how OU compiles the list it submits to the CAC.According to NFL operations, programs can submit up to five players to be evaluated each year; requests to submit more than five are determined on a case-by-case basis. This year, Oklahoma submitted four players for evaluation.Murray has until January 14 to apply for entry into the 2019 NFL Draft, so he has about a month to make a formal decision. By having his name submitted to the CAC, Murray isn’t binding himself to any type of NFL commitment, but it does appear he is at least trying to cover all the bases for his future, no pun intended.Murray and Oklahoma will take on No. 1 Alabama in the Orange Bowl on January 1 for the right to play for the national championship.

Dabo on Trevor Lawrence:* He’s not the starter until he earns it* Chase Brice has a great practice today * Random baseball analogy I didn’t quite understand.Welcome to spring football!— Hidden Agenda Lie Enactor (@ADavidHaleJoint) February 27, 2019Brice, of course, had a big hand in saving Clemson’s undefeated season last year.In his first start, Lawrence left Clemson’s game against Syracuse with an injury. Brice came in, acquitted himself well, and led the Tigers to a comeback home victory over an Orange team that finished with 10 wins, and beat Clemson in 2017.Superstar running back Travis Etienne was the gamebreaker in that one, but the Tigers likely don’t win if not for some big throws by Brice.Of course, none of that means that Lawrence is in danger of losing his job. This is definitely a motivational move by Swinney, more than anything. As a true freshman, he took major steps forward, and he’d probably be the No. 1 pick if he was in the 2019 NFL Draft.Logically, we all know that Lawrence will be the starter as long as he’s on campus, barring an injury or other unforeseen circumstance. That doesn’t mean he’s just going to be handed the job though.Clemson spring football practice started today, and Dabo Swinney reportedly said that Trevor Lawrence has to “earn” the starting quarterback job.According to ESPN’s David Hale, Swinney lauded second-stringer Chase Brice for his practice today.
USC must be able to offer something other than money to pull Meyer out of retirement. The Trojans have burned through Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkisian and perhaps Helton since Pete Carroll left. The administration is anything but steady right now. Maybe Meyer cures all that, but it’s more likely he opts to stay out of a head-to-head battle with Chip Kelly in a conference that doesn’t have as much weight as it used to. USC and Ohio State are historical rivals, too, even if that’s a big outdated. If you’re looking for a Big Ten coach that fits USC, then maybe take a look at Penn State’s James Franklin. He had to address those rumors last year. Maybe they swirl again in November if Helton is canned.Meyer retired from coaching following the 2018 season, citing health issues. The three-time national title-winning head coach is only 55, though, and many see him eventually returning to the sideline.Bender, however, doesn’t believe it’ll be at USC. Not next year, anyway. “I’m not convinced at all that we should play this game again – here or there or anywhere – unless we can protect our fans, our band and of course, our athletes. So I’ve asked – I’ve reached out to President Wintersteen as well as President Nook at UNI because we don’t ever, I believe, play in their venue but they play in our venues. I think all three of us need to sit down and have a series of conversations with our athletic directors, with our band directors and with our campus security and safety people and say ‘how do we protect and ensure that something like what happened last weekend – eight days – doesn’t happen again?’”While it seems unlikely that Iowa and Iowa State will actually stop playing each other annually, it does appear the school is now taking what happened seriously. Perhaps the game will became a permanent Noon kickoff to keep fans in check a bit better. Iowa president Bruce Harreld is now suggesting that he’s not “convinced” the Hawkeyes should be playing the Cyclones in football anymore.Early last week, following Iowa’s 18-17 win in Ames, Iowa announced it was opening an investigation into an incident involving the program’s band after the contest. Later in the week, the two schools issued a joint statement on the matter, pushing sportsmanship between the two sides moving forward.A few students in the Iowa band took to social media to express their disappointment with how the athletic department handled the situation. In their posts, they alleged physical and sexual abuse at the hands of Iowa State fans.As a result, Iowa reopened its investigation. Now, Monday, Harreld told The Daily Iowan that he’s not sure the two sides should play anymore.

A clash with either Philipp Kohlschreiber or Marco Cecchinato will be the winner’s reward. The 37-year old Federer moved around the court like his younger self as he rifled in 17 winners in the opening set, having broken Sousa in the seventh game before he saved a triple break point, the last one with a stunning crosscourt forehand.advertisementHaving broken Sousa’s serve in the opening game of the second set, the Swiss maestro was at his best again in the seventh as he saved a double break point and went on to wrap up the entertaining contest.”I came out of the blocks well and held serve throughout, so I am very happy to be in the next round,” said Federer.”I played today already and Borna didn’t. I don’t know whether it’s a disadvantage or not but either way it’s going to be tough.”After crashing out in the semi-finals on home soil in Madrid, Nadal wasted no time in making a statement of intent as he blew away Chardy.Nadal won 80 per cent of the points on both his first and second serve as he tormented the Frenchman with a barrage of stinging baseline shots.Osaka made a slow start against Cibulkova as the Slovakian broke the world number one in the third game of the opening set but regained her composure quickly. The Japanese served two aces to save a double break point in the eighth game and enjoyed plain sailing for the rest of the tie after clinching the game with a service winner. In the men’s draw, Fernando Verdasco ground out a surprise 4-6 6-4 7-5 win over fifth seed Dominic Thiem, as did Jan-Lennard Struff with a 6-2 6-3 hammering of Marin Cilic. Also Read | Novak Djokovic has a sick obsession with wanting to be liked: Nick KyrgiosFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
