Funding their way to Capitol

first_imgNORWALK – It’s Sacramento or bust for dozens of Lakeside Middle School eighth-graders. The students have their hearts set on taking a special but expensive day-long trip to the state’s Capitol next month. It is the first time ever that Lakeside Middle School has been invited by Whittier-area state Assemblyman Rudy Bermudez to see the Legislature in action, said teacher Maria Pilios, who is organizing the trip. “I was in the fifth grade when my class went to Sacramento and, let me tell you, I remember every second of it,” Pilios said. Some students who could not afford the cost were matched with sponsors. But even with sponsorships, the group of about 73 students is still short by about $1,300 in covering all its expenses. Now, Pilios and her students are hoping benevolent residents and business owners from the Whittier community will step in to make their trip a reality. “This is the first time that the kids in this community will be allowed to see this. We really want it to be a success,” Pilios said. “It would be great to have the community’s support.” To help raise money, the students are selling popcorn, candy and raffle tickets for merchandise they have collected. They are also selling 50-cent ballots for a contest in which students get to vote for a teacher to dress in a costume that fits their personality for one day. “We’re doing everything we can to raise this last bit of money,” Pilios said. According to the itinerary, the students will depart for Sacramento at 6 a.m. June 8. They will visit the Assembly gallery and other places of interest. They are set to return home at 9:30 p.m. Bermudez said he plans to personally greet the students in Sacramento. “Whenever residents come to Sacramento, I stop what I’m doing and bring them onto the floor,” he said. “I also give them a history of the building and a tour of the different rooms and offices.” It’s something 14-year-old Eddie Castaneda is looking forward to. “You don’t really pay attention to this stuff in class until you visualize it,” he said. “And I don’t think I’d ever go to Sacramento if the school didn’t help us do it.” But first, the students need to finance their trip. They recently received donations from the city of Norwalk, the Santa Fe Springs Firefighter Association, and Big’s Pizza, which agreed to hold a “Lakeside Night” at the restaurant and donate a percentage of the sales profits. “If we’re successful with this, we’re going to try to go to Washington, D.C., next year,” Pilios added. “It’s just such a good opportunity for the kids.” (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3051160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. A budget without alluding to the promises could galvanise the divided opposition. However, the government would have to balance it against the reform aspirations of India Inc.
